Career Leadership Academy Living-Learning Community

This living-learning community is coming in the Fall of 2010.

Students in the new Career Leadership Academy Living-Learning Community meet other students who want to get a jump start on planning their career and developing leadership skills by joining the Career Leadership Academy Living-Learning Community. This community is open to all first year students and offers you exclusive opportunities to network with employers, interact with faculty from various disciplines, and have upper-class students from the Career Leadership Academy serve as student mentors during the fall semester. You will earn academic credit by participating in the required leadership and career development class during the spring semester.

We know what employers want from new college graduates. They want to hire people with great communication, interpersonal, and teamwork skills. Employers want people who can take initiative and demonstrate a strong work ethic. This living-learning community is designed to help first year students get a jump-start at developing the skills employers seek in their new hires so that they can make the most of their college career.

Career Leadership Academy-Phase I:
409:106 The Self Aware Leader

Career Leadership Academy offers an exciting opportunity for students to develop their leadership and employee readiness skills-all while earning academic credit. The entire Academy is a 4-semester program designed to give students a competitive edge through seminars, activities, and events all designed to help them become a leader in the classroom, on campus, and in their career field of choice. Students will learn about themselves and how they can gain the skills that employer's desire. Students will have the opportunity to apply leadership concepts to their career planning strategies as well as gain insights into and develop an understanding of the working world.

Phase I is the first of a four semester series. The ten-week Phase I course will cover leadership history and concepts, goal setting, the Relational Leadership Model, personal values and ethics, meaningful involvement and engagement, career development information, and self-awareness assessments. Activities may include:

  • Interaction with faculty, staff, students, and employers;
  • Exclusive dinners with faculty and employers;
  • Workshops focused on career and leadership development topics;
  • Mentor/mentee program linking upper-class Career Leadership Academy students with living-learning community students;
  • Social events with Career Leadership Academy students, instructors, and partners.
