This living-learning community is coming in the Fall of 2010.
The Hispanic Culture and Language Living-Learning Community will engage students in social, academic, and creative hands-on activities related to Spanish language and Hispanic culture. Students will participate in cultural opportunities at Iowa and in the local communities, through dialogue, art, food, and music. Spanish speaking experience at all levels, from beginner to native speaker, is welcome.
Students in this community will earn one semester hour of credit by participating in the Hispanic Culture and Language course. The course involved enrichment activities and academic skill enhancement, and develops a greater knowledge of the Hispanic culture and language development.
Community activities include:
- A variety of fieldtrips to local communities to hear cultural speakers and interact with community members and share celebrations;
- Spanish-language film series;
- Discussions and Interactions with the Spanish Department;
- Presentations on study abroad in Spanish speaking countries, careers using Spanish, and introductions to programs on campus related to Spanish;
- Opportunities to participate in programs through the Center for Diversity and Enrichment;
- Mentoring in local elementary schools with Spanish-speaking students;
- Opportunities for service projects involving the Hispanic community.
