Residence Life Positions

Desk Clerk

Student Desk Clerks at the Currier Hall Desk

Approximately 100 positions. Duties include answering questions, addressing concerns, distributing mail, and providing support for students residing in residence halls. Perform miscellaneous office and desk duties as required. Clerks in Hillcrest, Currier and Mayflower will also staff the Fitness Center Desks.

Work up to 20 hours during the academic year and up to 40 hours during summer and winter breaks. Shifts range around the clock with one early a.m. and one overnight shift required once a week. Beginning wage is $7.25 per hour.

Student Tutors

Tutor individuals or small groups (3-5) of students, assisting them in mastering course content and in becoming more independent, confident and self-directed learners. Tutors will work in either the East (Burge, Currier, Daum, Stanley and Mayflower) or West (Hillcrest, Quad, Rienow and Slater) Neighborhood. Scheduling is determined each semester for 2 hours per night (Sunday - Thursday) for a total of 2 - 10 hours per week. Tutors are needed for a wide variety of subjects; the majority of requests are consistently for rhetoric, mathematics, chemistry and biological sciences.

Must be enrolled as a student at The University of Iowa with a cumulative UI GPA of 3.0, and a grade of A- or higher in courses tutored. Tutors must have excellent written and verbal communication and organizational skills, experience working with a diverse population, and be proficient in using computers. Must also successfully complete a criminal background check and maintain a minimum semester GPA of 3.0.

Hourly salary is $9.00. Hours are limited to 10 hours per week (160 hours per semester).

Technology Positions

User/Desktop Computer Support - POSITION CLOSED

Assist staff in University Housing by providing troubleshooting, problem solving, and general support for departmental computers, printers and peripheral devices; install, configure, and place equipment; and perform preventive maintenance on equipment. Working knowledge of the Microsoft Windows XP operating system and the Microsoft Office 2007 suite including Outlook 2007 is required. Must have a valid driver's license and meet and maintain the requirements of The University of Iowa Fleet Safety Program. At least one-year work experience in hardware and software troubleshooting is strongly preferred. Working knowledge of application software such as Internet Explorer and Adobe Acrobat is strongly desired. Working knowledge of computer programming and a modern programming language such as java would be useful. Must be a reliable self-starter who can work with novice to advanced computer users. May perform individual or small group computer training. Must be able to move up to 50 pounds occasionally.

Hourly salary is $10.70. This position is limited to 20 hours per week (320 hours per semester) and 40 hours per week during Thanksgiving, winter, spring, and summer academic breaks. Hours will generally be scheduled Monday-Friday, between 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Student Residential Dining Worker

Food Service Worker

Approximately 200 positions. Variety of positions including dining room attendants, checkers, student coordinators, food prep assistants, receiving attendants, kitchen/automated ware washing assistants, and food service line attendants. Uniform T-shirt required and provided with a $5.00 refundable deposit per shirt. Work up to 20 hours during the academic year. 2-3 hour shifts from 6:00 a.m. - 9:00 p.m., seven days a week. Facilities & Operations Positions

Maintenance Helper

Approximately 6 positions available during the academic year and 12 positions during the summer. Duties include assisting the Facilities Mechanic III with repairs and preventative maintenance. Clean and service smoke detectors; change air filters; replace window air conditioner units; clean cooling coils and equipment; repair window screens; unplug sinks, stools, and urinals; assist with fire panel checks; paint; and other mechanical work as assigned. Uniform shirts provided; jeans and sturdy shoes preferred. Work up to 20 hours during the academic year and up to 40 hours during summer and winter breaks. Hour of operation are 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., Monday-Friday. Beginning rate is $7.70 per hour during the academic year and higher during the summer. Custodians - Summer Only

Approximately 30 positions to work 40 hours per week during the summer only. Duties include cleaning student rooms and public areas, unload trucks, move furniture, and perform other miscellaneous custodial work in the residence halls. Hours are 7:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., Monday - Friday and occasional weekends. Pay rate is $10.69 per hour for summer 2008. Resident Assistant (Student) Positions - CLOSED

  • Successful resident assistant candidates must:
  • Have 30 semester hours completed by the beginning of Fall Semester, 2009
  • Have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 (4.00 scale)
  • Submit a completed Resident Assistant Application and 2 reference forms by 5:00 PM, December 31, 2008

Approximately 118 positions are available during the academic year with a limited number during summer for students with sophomore or above status. RAs live on and manage floors of 40 to 75 students. They are responsible for serving as role models for residence hall students; confronting inappropriate behavior and developing a community on the floor. RAs provide assistance to students through peer counseling and resources skills, planning and implementing social and educational programs, and being on-call to respond to emergencies on a 24-hours-a-day basis. Applications are generally due by the end of December for the next academic year although exceptions are occasionally made for departmental purposes. Graduate Assistantships - CLOSED

There are three types of Graduate Assistantship positions. Interested candidates must have acceptance in a Master's Program. Priority is given to Student Development Program (SDP) Masters' students; however this does not exclude consideration of students outside of this program of study. SDP recruitment for the six Graduate Assistantship positions usually begins in early March. Live-in Assistant Hall Coordinator positions are generally recruited at the Oshkosh Placement Exchange. Other positions are typically interviewed during on campus recruitment dates set by the academic department. Additional information will be available here beginning early spring 2007 for the 2007-08 school year.

Applications Development and Support II or III - POSITION CLOSED

University Housing is seeking an Application Developer to join an expanding IT team. This position will be part of a team responsible for the analysis, design, implementation, documentation, training, and ongoing support of web-based departmental software applications, including replacements to existing applications, as well as new applications which integrate multiple electronic information sources. These applications may include custom designed and developed web-based applications, object oriented applications (i.e., JAVA, .Net) or installed commercial applications. A qualified candidate will have an appropriate Bachelors degree or equivalent combination of education and experience. Reasonable (3-5 yrs) to extensive (5-7 yrs) experience and expertise in applications development or related field is required.

Area Coordinator - POSITION CLOSED

The University of Iowa is seeking a self-motivated individual with demonstrated leadership for an Area Coordinator position. The qualified individual will be responsible for creating dynamic living-learning communities by overseeing the operations of a University residence hall neighborhood. Responsible for the supervision of professional full-time hall coordinator(s), graduate assistant - assistant hall coordinators; full-time clerical staff, and student staff; individual and community development, adjudicating policy violations; assisting with facilities management of the neighborhood (buildings and grounds); chairing a residence life committee (such as RA recruitment, selection and training); and coordinating administrative services/operations.

Master's degree in related field preferred. A Bachelor's degree and a minimum of two years residence hall work experience or an equivalent combination of related education and supervisory experience required. Excellent verbal and written communication skills and reasonable experience in using computers, including Word, Excel, and email are required. Ideal candidate will have reasonable (1-3 years) experience in personnel supervision; 2-3 years post Master's degree work experience in a residence hall environment; excellent organizational skills; excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work with a diverse population; creative and self-motivated individual with demonstrated leadership experience; reasonable experience in handling multiple assignments, conflicting demands or priorities; and some experience working with a collective bargaining agreement.

This is a required professional live on position and a furnished two-bedroom apartment and a meal plan are provided. The position offers a salary of $37,624.00 for a 12-month appointment and excellent University benefits.
