The Market Places offer a wide variety of menu choices. There are always many entree and side dishes from which to choose. Sometimes, it's hard for students to make food and lifestyle choices that will keep them healthy during their stressful college years. "Live Smart" is a Residential Dining initiative created to encourage students to choose a well-balanced diet and to participate in a regular exercise program.
Nutrition
The Residential Dining staff is committed to providing nutritious and tasteful foods for our customers. Our philosophy is that all foods are "healthy" if consumed in moderation and in consideration of the body's needs.
To aid you in making healthy food choices, Residential Dining provides a detailed nutritional breakdown of our most popular menu items through our Menus page. Sample menus for balanced, healthy 2000 calorie days at the Market Place are available to help guide your selections. In addition, we have a brochure to help you explore vegetarian options in the Market Place. Check out the following web sites for more information relating to nutritious choices:
Market Places go Transfat Free
Burge and Hillcrest Market Places utilize Asoyia, a heart-healthy, soybean frying oil that provides enhanced taste and crispiness to fried foods. Asoyia is also low in saturated fat, cholesterol-free and made from non GMO soybeans. Best of all, it is a product developed at Iowa State University and produced on Iowa farms. For more information, contact www.asoyia.com.
Physically Active
Part of living smart is being physically active, as well as nutritionally aware. Regular exercise helps not only your body, but your mind and spirit as well. Students at UI have a wide variety of exercise options, including intramural sports, Night Games and fitness centers. There are also several websites that can provide both instruction and inspiration.
Resident Assistants also offer health-related programming throughout the year.
