Academic Initiatives/Programming
University Housing-Office of Residence Life strives to provide educational and social programming for students living in our residence halls. Some of our programs include tutoring, MAP Works, faculty involvement, Living-Learning Programs, Night Games, earthwords, and many more events in our halls to support student development while at the University of Iowa.
Tutoring
University Housing offers free, walk-in tutoring between the hours of 8:00 pm-10:00 pm
Sunday through Thursday in Quadrangle Hall (Rehder Lounge), Currier
Hall (North Lounge), and Mayflower Hall (Classroom).
Tutoring is offered in the following subjects: Rhetoric/Writing, Chemistry, Biological
Sciences, and Mathematics. If you have additional tutoring

Call for Involvement University Housing, in collaboration with the Office of the Provost, invite all faculty members to participate in the 2009-2010 Call for Involvement. This opportunity pairs faculty and staff members' professional and personal interests with students living in the residence halls. Are you looking for a venue to present your latest research before a big conference? Do you want to share your passion for guitars with students? Do you like to knit and would love to teach others? Are you an expert on cholesterol and want to share new clinical findings? Are you attending a concert on campus and willing to meet with students before or after to discuss the event? The 2009-2010 Call for Involvement provides this opportunity for you. Call for Involvement is monitored and supported by the Office of Residence Life. Living-Learning Communities Living-Learning Communities provide various opportunities to connect in class topics to out-of-class activities. Iowa's living-learning communities are a great way to find people you can relate to from the moment you arrive on campus. Night Games Night Games is a student driven organization committed to providing leadership opportunities for students through the planning and facilitation of a safe, late night, alcohol alternative event for the University of Iowa campus community. Approximately once a month on a Saturday Night the group hosts Night Games at the UI Field House from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Activities such as basketball, badminton, rock climbing, swimming, volleyball, dodgeball, and special events (such as SCUBA and tournaments) are free and open to the public. Night Games provides free pizza and drinks too! Night Games is coordinated by University Housing/Office of Residence Life and Recreation Services. . MAP-Works (Making Achievement Possible) MAP-Works is an inventory designed to improve student success and retention-through early intervention. Students in the West neighborhood will be encouraged to engage in this opportunity during fall 2009. Students who participate in this inventory will receive information to educate them about issues related to their college transition and academic success. Students will be informed of any gaps between their behavior and their anticipated outcomes. Academic Initiatives Manager Heather works closely with students, faculty, and staff to create, implement, and support Living-Learning Communities across the residential campus, fostering student engagement and connectedness to the University of Iowa campus. Heather works closely with the Office of the Provost to promote student success for all residents on campus and to enhance student's learning experience. Heather has a breadth of experience in academic/student affairs which includes: residence life, university lecture, orientation, and diversity education. Academic Initiatives, Graduate Assistant Misty is a Academic Initiatives graduate assistant working with the Living-Learning Communities in the Office of Residence Life. In her role she provides support by maintaining and developing LLCs. Misty is a graduate student in the Student Development Program in the College of Education. Student Learning Coordinator Michelle develops, implements and administers developmentally-based, comprehensive, system-wide academic success programs including residence hall tutoring, early warning alert system for residence hall students, and academic programming. Michelle also works with the live-in residence life staff to enhance the living/learning environment that stimulates individual and community growth. Michelle has a broad set of student/academic affairs experience including residence life, academic advising, university lecture, and orientation. Student Learning, Graduate Assistant Stephanie is the graduate assistant of Student Learning for the Office of Residence Life. In her role, she advises earthwords, the original undergraduate literary review on campus, co-supervises the University Housing tutoring staff, supports students academically through programming and early intervention programs. Student Development Coordinator Kate Sojka wears the hat as the Student Development Coordinator for the Office of Residence Life. Kate assesses and develops events and services around the needs and interests of residents in the

Student Development, Graduate Assistant Allison "Alli" Allmon is the feather in Sojka's hat as the Student Development, Graduate Assistant. Alli also serves as the adviser for the student organization Night Games. She is enrolled as a second year Ph.D student in the Counseling Psychology Program.
