Student Hall Government Organizations

The Residence Life Programs Office oversees all financial operations of hall governments, as well as advising ARH. It also provides various leadership development programs for student leaders, including leadership conferences, individual programs, and individual student advising.

ARH (Associated Residence Halls) is the overarching student government body for the residence halls. The purpose of ARH is to provide a student voice in the residence halls regarding the community environment, to foster student development through educational, social, and recreational interaction, and to effectively represent the residence hall students at all levels of university government. The accomplishment of this goal is the result of the interaction of four organizational groups. The groups consist of: ARH Senate, the Committee System, Cabinet, and the Board of Directors.

The Senate is the legislative branch of ARH and consists of twenty-seven representatives, with three senators for each hall association. Senators are selected through an election conducted by the association in early fall.

The Committee System is really a part of the senate, but a committee member need not be a senator. The committees include the Financial Board, Programming, and many other select committees.

Cabinet consists of hall association presidents, committee chairs, and the ARH Board of Directors. This group is responsible for the distribution of money designated as educational funds, as well as, serving as a liaison among the nine hall associations.

Board of Directors The nine ARH board positions include: Executive Director, Finance Director, Extended Services Director, Campus Affairs Director, Programming Director, National Communications Coordinator (NCC), Associations Director, Outreach Director, Communications/Marketing Director.

These groups work together to effectively represent student concerns in the residence halls to University Housing and the University administration. If you need more information, call the ARH office in Burge Residence Hall at 319-335-3173 (or 5-3173 on campus).

Hall associations are the building blocks of ARH. With these associations, the students of the residence halls can expect an improved way of life, not only through community improvements, but also through programming efforts. Through gathering together to experience social and educational programs floors begin to enhance their feeling of a community environment.
