Address Information and ISIS

University policy requires the posting of current address information on ISIS, including your building and room number and your parents' address. Residents are prohibited from changing ISIS address information until the housing contract expires or is canceled. If your room assignment is changed, Contracts and Assignments will update ISIS information automatically. For students who request confidentiality, the University will not release address information to the general public. Students interested in restricting the release of address information or other directory information should contact the University Registrar, Room 1 Jessup Hall or place an address restriction on your address via ISIS. To use ISIS to create address restriction simply go to the "change address" option found on the "myUIOWA" option of ISIS and place the desired "address, phone, or both" restriction.

Air Conditioning

Room air conditioners are provided in many residence hall rooms. Students may not bring their own units. Air conditioners are designed for use during the "cooling season" from April 15 - October 15. At all other times the electric service to the air conditioning units may be turned off. Requests for air conditioner repair or replacement are only acted upon during the cooling season.

If air conditioners are used year round, it will result in the destruction of the compressor. Labor and materials to replace the compressor in window units is over $500. If used in months other than designated cooling periods and the compressor is damaged, residents may be held responsible for replacing or repairing the compressor.

Following are detailed instructions on air conditioner operation. Report any problems by going to your 24-hour desk. Students should not make repairs themselves.

  1. Operate the unit only with the windows closed.
  2. Set the thermostat dial to the middle of the cooling range; if this is too cool, decrease the setting to where it is comfortable.
  3. Never set the dial at the maximum setting for long periods of time.
  4. Keep the front of the unit free of drapes, posters, etc.
  5. Do not operate the unit when it is below freezing outdoors; if you do, ice will form on the coils, and the unit will be damaged.
  6. After turning the unit off, wait several minutes before restarting the air conditioner to avoid damaging the unit.
  7. Do not unplug the A/C unit, this could damage the compressor. Other outlets in the room are not designed to handle the additional electrical load.
Alcohol

All University of Iowa residence halls are substance free. Residents and guests regardless of age are not allowed to possess or consume alcohol or alcohol containers in the residence halls. Students are responsible for their guests. Any student found in possession of alcohol or full or empty alcohol containers (bottles or cardboard carriers) will be subject to disciplinary action including alcohol education as well as a monetary fine ranging from $200 - $700. The exact amount of the fine is determined based on the quantity of alcohol and people involved. Students who host events in their rooms with alcohol may be subject to immediate removal from the residence halls. Being in the presence of alcohol, even if you are not consuming, is also against university policy and subject to a fine.
