Electrical Appliances

All appliances must be in good working order. Do not overload electrical outlets with adapters or extension cords. All extension cords must be UL approved. Rooms are not wired to permit the use of any large electrical appliances including room air conditioners (unless supplied by the University), large refrigerators (over five cubic feet and/or drawing more than 9 amps), space heaters, etc. Halogen lamps are also prohibited. For safety reasons, we recommend using only appliances with an auto shut-off feature. Also see Cooking Appliances on page page 10.

Elevators

Passenger elevators located within the residence halls are provided for use by residents of that building, their guests, and departmental staff. The following actions are prohibited and may result in disciplinary action:

  1. Damage and/or vandalism to the elevators (i.e., prying doors open, jumping, etc.).
  2. Use of emergency alarms and emergency stops in situations other than an emergency.
  3. Unauthorized use of an elevator key.
  4. Evacuating people from the elevator without trained personnel.

If you lose your keys down an elevator shaft and you wish to have them retrieved, you will be responsible for paying the charge for their retrieval. This charge is approximately $75-$300. You may prefer to request a room lock change and a building entrance replacement key/prox card, each of which have an associated charge.

Emergency

University of Iowa Police: (319) 335-5022

Emergency number (for fire, ambulance, etc.): 911.

A professional live-in residence hall staff member is always available through the front desks.

Emergency Contact System & Missing Student Policy

Students are encouraged to list the name of a family member and/or contact person on their confidential card in case of an emergency. This contact person will be notified not more than 24 hours following a report of a missing student. In the event of a change in the contact person's phone number or address, the information on the confidential card should be updated as soon as possible by going to the front desk of their residence hall and directing the desk clerk to update the contact information.

Persons concerned that a resident is missing should contact the University of Iowa Department of Public Safety as soon as possible at (319) 335-5022 and submit a missing person report. If Housing staff receive notice that a student is missing, Public Safety will be contacted. Within 24 hours following receipt of the missing person report, the emergency contact name listed on the student’s confidential card will be notified in an effort to ascertain the student’s whereabouts and/or contact the student. In the case of a resident who is under 18 years of age and not an emancipated individual, that the institution is required to notify a custodial parent or guardian not later 24 hours after the time that the student is determined to be missing.

Explosives and Other Combustibles

The possession, use or distribution of any type of fireworks, ammunition/gun powder, fuses, or any explosives/combustibles of any kind is prohibited and will result in disciplinary action. Propane tanks may not be stored in residence halls.
