Staff in the Residence Halls

Resident Assistants

A resident assistant (RA) is a member of each residence hall floor. RAs are student staff members who are carefully selected and trained. Their job is to assist the residents in their adjustment to the halls and to The University of Iowa. RAs are a source of information about activities, events, and policies. They also assist residents with roommate conflicts, homesickness, or academic concerns. Each RA also plans activities - social as well as educational - for the residents of the floor.

Hall Coordinators

The residence halls have hall coordinators who are full-time professionals, with a master's degree living in the buildings. The hall coordinators manage the day-to-day operations of a 24-hour desk, advise the student government building associations, supervise RAs, and oversee all programming and counseling. Some Hall Coordinators are assisted by Graduate Assistant - Assistant Hall Coordinators who are students pursuing a master's degree in student development.

Area Coordinators

Area coordinators are full-time professionals who live in each neighborhood. Area coordinators are educated in student life issues and are responsible for maintaining safe and friendly residence halls. They have an advanced degree in counseling, student development, or a related field. Area coordinators supervise all aspects of the day-to-day operations of the buildings and the grounds surrounding them. They train and supervise hall coordinators, counsel students with personal or behavioral problems, implement discipline, oversee building operations, and coordinate programming activities throughout each neighborhood.

Office of Residence Life -
Building Communities in the Residence Halls

Residence life staff actively plan and provide events and services throughout the academic year to foster a strong sense of community on individual floors, and within buildings and neighborhoods. Residents may participate in an array of activities that range from social interactions with other residents to programs that help with transitioning into college life and enhancing their personal growth and skills.

Individual Growth: What would you like to gain from your residence hall experience? Residents are encouraged to assist resident assistants with planning and implementing events for their floor and/or building. Resident Assistants focus on programs that specifically meet their residents' needs and interests. Topics include social outlets, academics, wellness, career development, and civic engagement.

Diversity Resources: Looking for a way to broaden your cultural outlook and global knowledge? Topics of past programs have included: religion, socio-economics, gender, immigration, and disabilities. Residence Life also sponsors a No Space for Hate program in the halls.

Involvement Opportunities: Would you like to make an impact on campus while learning life skills? Residents may serve on various hall-related organizations such as Night Games, hall governments, and the creative literary magazine titled earthwords.

Residence Hall Student Government: A wide variety of experiences exist for students to get involved in floor, hall, or campus-wide residence hall government (Associated Residence Halls– ARH). Students who get involved in residence hall leadership positions gain valuable skills and knowledge. They get one-on-one leadership advising from the Residence Life staff, polish their communication and leadership skills, and make lifelong friends. We invite you to join floor, hall and campus government (ARH) and take charge of your experience.

If you want to get involved or to receive more information about any activities or programs, contact the Office of Residence Life in 260 Stanley Hall at 335-3700.
