All residence halls at the University of Iowa have been wired for ethernet network access. Each resident room in these buildings now has a communications outlet (see Figure A) which centralizes the jacks providing various communications services to that room.
Try to have an ethernet adapter installed in your computer and tested before you arrive. During the week prior to the start of classes and the first week of classes, stop by the ResNet Information Table in your Residence Hall to pick up a ResNet Connection Kit. ResNet Information Tables will be located in Burge/Daum, Currier/Stanley, Hillcrest, Mayflower, Rienow/Quad, and Slater and will be staffed:
Monday - Friday: 10:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m.
Saturday & Sunday: Noon - 7:00 p.m.
Setup your computer in your room, plug it into the electrical outlets, connect your ethernet dropcord, and turn on your equipment. Additional instructions are provided in the ResNet Connection Kit to help you self-install your connection to ResNet. If you cannot self-install, look for a member of the ResNet Crew to help you. They can be identified by a nametag which states "Campus Services – Information Technology Services", along with their name. Otherwise, go to the ResNet Information Table located in the lobbies of the halls above for assistance.
Services for (1) telephone, (2) computer networking, and (3) cable television are available. Each service requires a connecting cord from its jack (see Fig. A) to the appropriate device (see Fig. B) which is unique for that service. Note specifically that the plug for the computer networking jacks is larger than the plug for the telephone jacks. In addition, the computer networking jacks are red. Click on the thumbnail pictures to enlarge them. Check the Computing FAQs for more information about connecting to ResNet.
