Whether you’re a high school student just checking out the University of Iowa campus or you’ve already been accepted, visiting is a great way to find out if the UI is right for you! There are lots of places to go and things to see around campus, and visiting before the start of your first year is a good way to get yourself acclimated to your new surroundings.

Places to Go

As a first-year student you will most likely be living in one of our residence halls on campus, so checking out some of those is a good way to get to know campus. We also invite you to check out one of our two Market Places. The University of Iowa has two dining halls, one on the West Campus in Hillcrest, and one on the East Campus in Burge.

Another campus facility highlight is the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center (CRWC). This state-of-the-art recreation center opened in 2010 and is a great place to work out, swim, play basketball, participate in group exercise classes and more!

Across from the CRWC is the UI Main Library, another focal point of campus. Getting to know your way around the library will be helpful to you, especially around finals!

The Iowa Memorial Union (IMU) is another place you will want to familiarize yourself with. The IMU is a great place to study or do homework and hang out with friends. It is also where the Iowa House Hotel is located. The River Room Café is also located on the first floor of the IMU. The building is also home of UI Dance Marathon, CAB concerts, and the Bijou Theater.

Iowa City Landmarks

The Old Capitol Building, located on the Pentacrest, is the center of campus. Inside is a historical museum with facts and artifacts from when Iowa City was the Capital of Iowa. Visit the museum to check out some of Iowa City's history!

Another Iowa City landmark to check out is historic Kinnick Stadium, where Hawkeye football games are played. Depending on what time of the year you visit, the stadium may look pretty empty, but on game day Saturdays the stadium is full of life! If you do happen to visit during football season, get tickets to a game and cheer on your (future) team!

Places to Stay

There are a number of full service and limited service hotels in the Iowa City area, including several that are close to campus. The Iowa House Hotel is right on campus in the Iowa Memorial Union, and is within walking distance from most of the UI residence halls. Two other hotels in downtown Iowa City are the Sheraton and Hotel Vetro; both are within walking distance of campus. There are also hotels in the Coralville area that many people choose when visiting campus.
