Being a Resident Assistant is one of the most valuable experiences to today's college student. This position teaches numerous skills that will be useful to you for many years. Resident Assistants have the opportunity to increase their understanding of people, develop leadership skills, plan and present social and educational programs, fine tune time management skills, solve group conflicts, learn how to be a better ally and advocate for students, learn to deal with the unexpected, and be a valuable part of a team. It's a great first step to building the skills needed to be successful in your professional career after college.
The successful candidate will meet the following qualifications:
- Must be a current University of Iowa full-time student
- Must have one year of on-campus living experience at the time of employment
- Must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5 each semester during the term of employment. For each semester of employment, RAs must achieve a minimum of a 2.0 semester GPA.
- Must be in good conduct standing with the University.
- Attend mandatory spring training (April 16, 2017), pre-fall training (tentatively July 31 - 11, 2017), and winter training (January 11-12, 2018).
- Must be available to work during Move-In week and On Iowa! (August 12 - 20, 2017).
- May not hold other paid employment during academic term of RA appointment
- Enroll, attend, and successfully complete a six-week introductory RA Class (Issues in College Residence Halls). The course meets on day a week for two hours for an option one credit hour.
- Demonstrate the following qualifications:
- Excellent verbal and written communication and organization skills.
- Ability to effectively work with a diverse population and adjust to challenging situations.
- Reasonable experience using computers, including Word, Excel, and email.
- Ability to show responsibility for own time-management.
- Must successfully complete a criminal background check.
RA Applications will be due November 3, 2016, by 5:00pm. Applications include a resume, 2 references, and three essay questions. Applications will then enter a screening process to see if candidates meet the listed qualifications, application essays and resumes will be reviewed, and a conduct check will be completed. Successful candidates will be invited to sign up for a first round interview. Interviews will take place from November 29 - December 2, 2016. The Resident Assistant position receives a salary of $5,000 pro-rated over a 10-month employment period. Other benefits include the experience you will gain while interacting with students and staff in your residence hall community, as well as an optional one credit hour from the RA course. As a condition of your employment as a Resident Assistant, you will be provided a single room, a full meal plan, and $100 Hawk Dollars each semester during the 2017-2018 academic year appointment.
