Recycling and Sustainability

University Housing & Dining shares the University of Iowa sustainability vision to divert from the landfill 60% of the waste produced in our buildings by 2020.  To achieve this goal we ask that all residents reduce the amount of waste they generate, reuse items such as water and beverage cups and bottles and place any recyclable items in the recycling containers in your building.  We are also working to help the University achieve net-negative energy growth by 2020.  What this means is that our current energy use will be no higher in 2020, even though we will add more new buildings to campus.  To achieve this goal we will be encouraging a culture of conservation throughout the residence halls.

University Housing & Dining has employed a number of sustainability initiatives including single-stream recycling in the residence halls, water bottle filling stations, kitchen grease filtering for bio-diesel fuel, light dimming after hours, trayless dining and food composting and pulping.  If you want to learn more about living sustainably, visit the Office of Sustainability website.
