How to Apply

We're glad you've chosen to live with us! If you have been admitted to the University of Iowa and will be 16 years of age by August 1, 2019, you can apply for housing in the residence halls. For the 2019-2020 academic year, all students living in the halls must be registered for at least 7 credit hours per semester.

Submit your application online between October 2 and May 31 to participate in online room selection. You can access the application through your Admissions Profile in MyUI. You will need to verify your personal and emergency contact information, agree to the contract terms and conditions, pay your $75.00 application fee and hit 'Submit.'

Please note: If you are under 18 years of age you will need parental permission. Students with an Admissions fee deferral will automatically have their $75.00 housing application fee deferred. It will be charged to the September UBill.

Once complete, you have reserved your place in line for online room selection.

Students who have completed the housing application will then be able to explore and personalize their housing options. This is when you can tell us if you need an ADA/medical accommodation, apply to join a living-learning community, and participate in roommate searches or requests.

Applications for living-learning communities must be received online by May 1, 2019.  If you are a student in need of an ADA/medical housing accommodation, your documentation must be received by May 15, 2019, to best support your needs.

The deadline to apply for housing in order to participate in online room selection is May 31, 2019.  All roommate requests must be mutually confirmed online by May 31, 2019. If you apply to join an LLC, both roommates must be accepted into the LLC in order to live together.

Online room selection will take place in June, based on the date your housing application is received on a first-come, first served basis. New Hawkeyes will select a room in New Student Housing or an LLC, if accepted.  If you join the honors program, you will automatically have the opportunity to select a room in Honors House as space allows.  More details about room selection will be sent to you in May.

If you applying after May 31, 2019, University Housing & Dining staff will make your assignment for you in mid-July.

Once your room is chosen you will select a meal plan, from the following options below. All residence hall students in rooms without a kitchen must select either the Gold or Black plan. Residence hall students in rooms with a University-supplied kitchen may select the Hawkeye, Gold, or Black plan.

  • Gold – unlimited market place meals, 75 flex meals, 8 guest meals per semester
  • Black – 145 market place meals, 75 flex meals, 8 guest meals per semester
  • Hawkeye – 75 flex meals per semester

Please note: If you do not select a meal plan, the Gold meal plan will be assigned as the default meal plan.

In July you will be able to make those online connections with your Hawkeye community. During this period you can also get to know your roommate, meet your residence hall staff and/or Living Learning Community faculty partners.

You will be assigned a date and time to move in August 20-22 based on your room assignment. Next, you will check-in and participate in On Iowa!, a program that allows you to discover Hawkeye traditions and what it means to live on campus. Lastly, we encourage you to commit to The IOWA Challenge. This challenges you to engage, excel, stretch, choose and serve within the University community.

Application Instructions

Login to your Application via MyUI. Select your application and choose the option that best fits you. When do you want to live on campus?  Select a contract period and begin the application.  If you've already started filling out an application, this allows you to return to that contract.

Review the steps to submit your application and follow the portal navigation key.

This page allows us to gather some personal information for your housing contract. By giving us your parent or guardian's email, we can send them important information and updates about living on campus.  Anyone can opt out of this communication later, if they wouldn't like to receive these updates.  We will never share this information with any third party.

On this page, we offer a place for you to give us information about who to contact if you are reported missing. Federal law requires that we obtain this information for all students living on campus.

Please take the time to review your housing contract, as it is a legally binding agreement. If you agree to the terms of the contract, you will receive a copy of the terms and conditions of your contract to your @uiowa.edu email address upon completion of your application.

You will be asked to electronically sign this page by entering you full name and eight-digit university ID number.

This contract becomes binding seven (7) days after you are notified of your room assignment via email.

Please note: If you are a minor during the time that you are filling out the housing application, a parent or guardian will be required to electronically sign the application on this page.

Your $75.00 non-refundable housing payment is required with your housing application. This fee is payable via credit card.  We are able to accept Visa, MasterCard, and Discover.

This page allows you to officially submit your housing application. Once your application is submitted, you will receive a confirmation email to your University of Iowa @uiowa.edu account.

Please note: Your application information will populate on this page as you complete each step of the process. Your preferences will be summarized, along with your completion date and time.

This page allows you to request a reasonable medical accommodation. If you need to request an accommodation, you are able to download and complete a form. You will also need to check the box that states 'I am requesting a reasonable housing accommodation.'

Your accommodation is not complete until you receive official confirmation from University Housing and Dining after completing all steps of the process. We will work with you one-on-one to complete the process.

Within our residence halls, we have different communities available for you across a variety of interest areas and provide a unique and specific living experience. All students are encouraged to consider a Living Learning Community (LLC) experience in the residence halls.

Students will be able to apply for one (1) LLC by selecting the LLC and answering a few brief questions.  Students who apply for an LLC will also be able to indicate two (2) additional LLCs for which they would like to be placed on a waitlist. If a student is selected for an LLC, they will need to confirm their acceptance to the LLC in mid-May.

University Housing and Dining is committed to providing communities that are open to all gender identities and expressions. If you are interested in gender inclusive housing options, you can select this on your application or email University Housing & Dining for more information.

We encourage students to tell their fellow Hawkeyes a little bit about themselves in order to match you with potential roommates. This page allows you to complete a lifestyle questionnaire about your living habits and preferences.

Provide your profile, search for, and request a roommate based on answers to the lifestyle questionnaire or a common living-learning community interest.  All roommate requests must be mutually confirmed online by May 31.

Students who apply before May 31, 2019 will participate in online room selection in June, based on the date your housing application is received on a first-come, first-served basis.

New Hawkeyes will select a room in New Student Housing or an LLC, if accepted.  If you join the honors program, you will automatically have the opportunity to select a room in Honors House as space allows.

Remember, returning students select their room in February and therefore not all room spaces will be available for new Hawkeyes.

This page allows you to select your meal plan. Select the Gold, Black, or Hawkeye Plan for the upcoming year.  Changes to the plan may be made in the first two weeks of the semester.  If you do not select a meal plan, you will be assigned the Gold meal plan by default.
