Winter Break

Leaving for Break?

Before you leave for break, make sure you follow the steps below.

  • Remove all food from you refrigerator and check expiration dates on other food items, throw anything away that will expire before January 15, 2022
  • Clean your refrigerator and microwave
  • Turn off everything in your room and unplug what you can
  • Leave your refrigerator plugged in
  • Remove all furnishing on or around the radiator
  • Take trash out to the dumpster
  • Make sure your window is closed and locked
  • Leave your heat on low
  • Make necessary arrangements for care of plants and fish (UH&D Staff will not provide care)
  • Do not put any potting soil or other solid materials down drains
  • Lock your door, take your room key and student ID with you
  • An express check-out can be completed anytime the front desk is open in your hall.
  • Once your room is entirely empty and cleaned, please go to the desk to check out.
  • The desk clerk will help you take care of all of your checkout steps, which includes updating your mail forwarding address and returning your key.
  • Once you return your key, you will no longer have access to your room.
  • An RA will check your room at a later time, if there are damage charges, you will receive an email notification.
  • If you rented a MicroChill, please contact MicroChill at 712-226-3250 to let them know you are moving rooms or leaving the University of Iowa.

Staying on Campus?

Housing is available during winter break at an additional fee of $350, which includes $50 in Hawkeye Dollars. Students that apply may reside in their residence hall room for the break period. Apply online at MyUI by clicking on the housing application button. Applications should be submitted by December 7. Students will receive their official contract and have until December 15 to cancel their plans without penalty. Cancellations after December 15 will be subject to a $50 late fee. Students with a demonstrated financial hardship regarding their ability to pay the winter break charge can e-mail housing and dining at for options to potentially reduce their break housing cost. Those requests should be made by Monday, December 13.

Quiet Hours During Break

Extended Quiet Hours:

  • December 5 – 11: 7:00 p.m. – 10:00 a.m.
  • December 12 - 18: 24 Hours

Meal Service During Break

Limited retail dining locations will be open during Winter Break, and students may use Hawkeye Dollars at these locations. More details about locations and hours will be available closer to break. Market places are not open for dining during Winter Break

Hall Desk Hours

Residence Hall Desks will close at 5pm on Saturday, December 18 and begin winter break hours. Currier Hall will remained open 24 hours throughout all of winter break.

Sunday, December 19 – Friday, January 7 Desk Hours of Operation

  • Currier: 24 hour desk
  • Burge, Catlett, Daum, Hillcrest, Mayflower, Petersen, Rienow, and Slater: 8 a.m.-5 p.m. (daily)

Saturday, January 8 – Friday, January 14 Desk Hours of Operation

  • Currier: 24 hour desk
  • Burge, Catlett, Daum, Hillcrest, Mayflower, Petersen, Rienow, and Slater: 8 a.m.-8 p.m. (daily)

Please note: Regular hours of operation will begin at 7 a.m. on Saturday, January 15, 2022.
