You Spoke, We Listened

University Housing & Dining at the University of Iowa has been conducting a resident satisfaction survey, with the ability to benchmark our results with other universities in the US, for over a decade. We have used student feedback to improve our programs, facilities, retention and other services offered to residents. The last survey was conducted in fall 2016. Every residence hall student who was not an RA was invited to participate. The following is a brief overview of the survey conducted with residents at the end of fall semester 2018.

We understand that value and variety for flex meals is very important to you. We regularly work with our suppliers to evaluate new items for flex meal use. This year we were able to expand our hours of service for flex meals at Clinton Street Market through equipment changes. We are actively identifying additional storage space to continue to offer additional flex meals and extend the hours that students can use them. We also look to other institutions as a benchmark and our meal plan rates are among the lowest in the Big Ten.

We understand that nutrition is important to you. The bedrock of healthy eating is variety and choice. Laura Croteau, Registered Dietitian (RD), Lead Dietitian (LD) works with all of our unit chefs to ensure we have a wide variety of menu items available from which nutritious meals can be selected.

Quality food options are as important to us as they are to you. That is why we have seven full-time award-winning chefs with over 50 years combined experience in a wide variety of culinary fields. Each of our market places has a dedicated head chef. Our dining team works diligently to craft a menu that is nutritious and current with popular trends.

Additionally, our team works with 25+ local partners to provide fresh and locally sourced food, which is incorporated into menu items and tasting events in the market places.

We continue to evaluate how to incorporate more made-to-order (MTO) options in the market places without causing long lines. Burge Market Place has added three MTO stations during the 2018-2019 year including; quesadillas, chopped salads and panini sandwiches to fit your lifestyle.

In the fall of 2018, University Housing & Dining opened Thrive, the first allergy free station, located in Burge Market Place. This station is void of gluten plus the top eight food allergies (fish, shellfish, egg, wheat, soy, peanuts, tree nuts, and milk). We plan to continue this station, so that you can enjoy the foods you love that meets your dietary needs.

Our LLCs have continued to develop their programming on campus. These changes include smaller LLC populations to help you build those connections, a shared course, and further development with academic partners. Attending hockey games, networking events, theater productions, various crafts and having family-style dinners are just some of the many ways that we help you to build your own community. If you feel something is missing, simply contact your RA.

This past year we renovated common spaces in Currier and gave the ITC in Hillcrest a fresh look. Between 2022-2024, we will be updating all student rooms in Hillcrest, along with pod-style bathrooms. Additionally, we are in the second year of a 4-year plan to update finishes in Burge Hall student rooms and hallways.

Along with the renovation of finishes in Burge, we are nearly finished with similar work in Currier Hall, and complete in Daum, Slater, and Rienow Halls. Additionally, Burge Market Place will receive new finishes in the servery, including; flooring, ceiling, lighting, paint, etc.

In Fall 2018, we implemented a new residential education model in the campus residence halls. This model allows you to advance your personal awareness, develop and reflect on your personal values, and explore various perspectives and experiences to foster connections and engage in your community. As a result of this, a variety of campus events and floor activities are implemented which serve an educational purpose and as a way to connect with your hall community.

We know that college will be an experience to remember, but we also want to want you to feel safe and secure. Our residence hall staff works closely with the University Department of Public Safety, and continually reviews safety policies and measures. We have security staff from Public Safety in the halls from midnight to 6:00 a.m. and have residence hall staff on duty or on call 24 hours a day, every day.

There has always been an option for Hawkeyes to return to campus for additional years. Recently, we have made great strides in communicating this option to students and informing them of the benefits that living on campus offers.

With a variety of room types, locations, and amenities, you’re sure to find something that fits your lifestyle. Returning students live in 7 of our 9 residence halls, in single, double, suite-style, and apartment-style rooms. Choosing to return to live on campus allows you to continue the success you’ve started and have convenient access to a variety of support resources on campus.
