For those bringing trailers and vehicles 10 feet or larger:
Students can move in after 5:30 p.m. (there is not space for your vehicle with the traffic during the day). Please note move-in volunteers will not be available after 5:30 p.m.
How we plan for Move-In
- We plan for traffic flow based on other things going on in the city (road closures, construction, special events).
- Parking near residence halls is very limited, so we make the schedule for move-in time slots based on parking.
- Elevator lines can get lengthy, so limiting numbers helps us control this as best as we can to help keep lobbies clear and try to mitigate elevator issues.
- UHD staff, campus staff, and volunteers work full days of move-in, so timing also accommodates for their schedules.

Frequently Asked Questions
How will students select their move-in date?
New students will receive an email from Housing and Dining by the end of this week with instructions on move-in selection. In this email, students will find their assigned move-in selection timeslot and further instructions for move-in.
New Hawkeyes are randomly assigned by building a date and time to login from July 16 – 18 and pick their arrival date. Students will login with their Hawk ID and password (link forthcoming) and choose a move-in date and time on either August 16, 17, or 18.
Returning Hawkeyes can login to select their arrival date and time starting July 23. Returning student move in is August 23 and 24. Returning students can move in as early as August 19 for a fee of $35 per day.
Move in dates may be selected until August 4, 2025.

How many people can select their move-in date at the same time?
Groups are limited to 200 students selecting at the same time.
Halls are divided into 3 or 4 groups, depending on the size and number of first-year students in the building.
What buildings select their move-in time each day?
Students should refer to their email for the specific time to login and select their move-in day/time.
- July 16: Mayflower, Daum, Rienow, and Currier
- July 17: Slater, Hillcrest, Stanley, Petersen
- July 18: Burge, Catlett
How many people can move in at a time?
Each building has a limited number of people that can move in at one time due to parking and logistics (elevators, carts).
Move-in time slots are 30 minutes each. Capacity ranges from 5 students to 20, depending on the building.
Why are new students pre-assigned a date and time for move-in date selection?
Previously, students were able to sign up on a first-come, first-served basis at a designated time by hall. Having all first-year students sign up on the same day was challenging for students, staff, and our website.
Hosting move-in date selection over several days will allow our staff more time to respond to student questions. Dividing each hall into groups will prevent the system from being slammed by everyone trying to access it at the same time, too.
I am part of X group/leadership/employment and must move in early for training. How do I sign up for an early time?
Student leaders, employees, and volunteers that are part of a group or program that requires early move in will work with UHD to set up move in times.
Students will be pre-assigned a move in time with their group.
Students should check in with their supervisor/group leader for more information.
Can new students move in before August 16? Or after August 18?
We are unable to accommodate move-in requests prior to August 16 to allow time for staff to prepare rooms and staff trainings to take place.
Arriving anytime between August 16 – 23 is an option for all our new students.
There are no mandatory commitments that new students need to be a part of before classes start. The events that take place during On Iowa! are numerous and focused on building social connections.
Students that move in August 19 – 22 can join the events when they are on campus. There will be many opportunities for connecting with students and starting their year off strong.
Can returning students move in before August 23?
Only pre-approved student leaders and move-in volunteers can move in before August 19.
Returning student move-in day is scheduled as Saturday, August 23. The earliest returning students can move in is August 19, due to new student move-in taking place August 16– 18.
There is a $35/day early arrival fee up until when returning student move in is scheduled for on August 23. Fees are charged to the September 1 U-Bill and based upon an August 19 move-in, students can anticipate the charge to be $105.
How can a returning student sign up to be a move-in volunteer?
- Complete the form online by August 5, 2025. Access the form here.
- Returning students can sign up to be a move-in volunteer and move in on Friday, August 15 after 12 p.m. There will be a required training on Friday evening to get your volunteer t-shirt.
- Volunteers must complete 4 shifts of 2.5 hours each. Those that do not complete the shifts will be charged $35/per day from August 15 through August 22, for an estimated cost of $280.

Can I pre-ship packages or belongings to the residence hall?
No, we do not accept packages prior to move-in as the residence halls do not have the space to store all of the packages until students arrive.
Please do not ship items to the residence hall prior to your move in day.
